Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, you'll find an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
