A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The construction of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
