Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using these drugs must be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle changes.
