The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
