Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
